Firefighter injured fighting afternoon house fire

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)–  A Birmingham firefighter is hurt and a local family homeless after a house fire Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out about 3:00 p.m. at a home on Eastbrook Drive. No one was at home when the fire broke out, but the fire destroyed the residence, and nearly all the possessions of the family that called it home.

Mary Bethune lived in the home with her 2 grandchildren. ” I got a call saying my house was on fire, so I rushed home and this is what I saw,” Bethune told WIAT42 News reporter Brittany Bivins.

Battalion Chief Brady Johnson with the Birmingham Fire Department said one firefighter was taken to the hospital after a line used to carry water broke. Johnson said the firefighter is expected to make a full recovery.
