HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: The Jefferson County Coroner, Bill Yates, has officially ruled Kindra Chapman’s death a suicide, or asphyxia by hanging.
ORIGINAL: The Homewood Police Department has released video recordings centered around Kindra Chapman’s death on July 14, 2015.
The entire video shows the booking process, Chapman being led to a cell, and finally–taking her own life. However, out of respect for both Chapman and her family the Homewood Police Department has not made the final moments of that video public.
Homewood Police told WIAT 42 that the entire video was shown to the legal counsel representing Chapman’s biological mother. They say the video also confirms the preliminary reports from the Coroner’s Office and the Jefferson County District Attorney regarding the cause of death.
On Thursday, Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls released a preliminary determination stating the in-custody death of Chapman was the result of a suicide. Falls tells WIAT 42 that the full video shows Chapman attaching a bed sheet to a wall support rail. Falls has not received the final autopsy report at the time time, which will include a toxicology report.
Chapman was arrested on the evening on July 14th and was charged with robbery
