Bill proposing Briarwood police force passes in special session

(WIAT) — State lawmakers didn’t pass a general fund budget, but they did handle some other business during the special session. They passed a bill that will allow Briarwood Presbyterian Church to create its own police department.

Sponsors of the bill say the police department will have full arresting authority and the ability to run criminal background checks, but its jurisdiction will be limited to the church campus.

Briarwood has a large Christian school with 3,000 students.

The bill now goes to the governor’s desk for his signature.
