Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue installs, inspects smoke detectors for residents

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Tuscaloosa County has seen seven fire deaths in the last year, and four of those happened in the last two months.

The most recent death happened last week in the Brookhaven neighborhood.

Tuscaloosa Fire Marshal Gene Holcomb said there is no indication the home had a working smoke alarm.

Now, Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue is working to do their part to try and prevent future fires. They spent time in the community Thursday night installing and inspecting smoke detectors.

“We’re gonna medical call the house if we notice they don’t have a smoke alarm, we’re gonna put up a smoke alarm in those situations too, our normal run if it’s not an emergency where somebody’s in grave danger,” said Holcomb.
