VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WIAT) — Police arrested Jake Hogan, 37, after they say he was stealing Visa gift cards in Vestavia Hills, spending them in Muscle Shoals and stashing the loot at his house in Tuscumbia.
Lt. Brian Gilham with the Vestavia Hills Police Department said earlier this month, his office got a call from Wren Rd.
The caller reported that someone had snatched two Visa gift cards from their doorstep.
Investigators quickly chased the cards, and found they’d already been spent in Muscle Shoals.
Meanwhile — Gilham said officers already had a hunch as to who the culprit was.
“(Hogan) was a nighttime burglar. So, that’s something that’s very rare in our city — something that doesn’t occur, fortunately, very often,” Gilham said. “When it did start occuring again, this person was the first one that popped on the radar, because that was the first time that it happened since the last time he was in the city.”
Vestavia Police contacted police in Hogan’s hometown of Tuscumbia, where the two agencies executed a search warrant at Hogan’s house.
There, Gilham said officers found the items purchased in Muscle Shoals, plus evidence of other thefts committed by Hogan, including another one in Vestavia, on Panaorama Dr.
“He’s done it once. He’ll do it again. Hhe needs to be put away. He needs to be put away for a long time,” Gilham said.
Hogan is charged with 3rd degree felony burglary in Jefferson County, and faces other charges in Colbert County. Gilham said more charges will likely be added.
Hogan is being held in the Colbert County Jail on $227,500 bond.
