SYLACAUGA, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, the man killed in the deputy involved shooting on Saturday was Derick Davis, 23, an escapee of the Department of Corrections.
Davis was serving a three year sentence for drug possession, and left his assigned facility on July 17.
ORIGINAL: The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said a Talladega County Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting Saturday afternoon that left one man dead in Sylacauga.
The incident happened about 1:45 p.m. near the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and West 8th Street. Talladega County Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore tells WIAT42 News the male victim, who has not been identified, was killed in the altercation. Kilgore referred all other questions to the State Bureau of Investigations. The deputy was not injured.
According to a Facebook post from the Sylacauga Police Department, the “deputy was forced to fire his weapon in the line of duty.”
Shortly after the incident, several people who said they were family members of the man who was shot were seen putting flowers near the site. They identified the man as a 23-year-old Sylacauga native, and claim the he had walked away from a work release program prior to today’s incident.
