TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — A University of Alabama student is recovering in the hospital after being involved in a hit and run accident.
Tuscaloosa Police say UA senior Rod Rahimizadeh was riding his bicycle late Saturday night and was struck by someone driving a black SUV who fled the scene. It happened just before midnight at the corner of Hargrove Road and Avalon Avenue.
Rhett Rickels is good friends with the victim. He says after the accident, Rahimizadeh was taken to the hospital and has forgiven the driver.
“The first thing Rod said once he woke up, he wrote with a pen and paper that I forgive him. That is Rods character and that is who Rod is,” Rickels said.
Rod Rahimizadeh is an English major who wants to become a teacher after graduation. Friends of the victim started a GoFundMe page for Rod, and have raised more than eight thousand dollars to help pay medical bills.
Rickels said, “I checked last night and the GoFundMe page has eight thousand dollars in in eight hours. And that is just reflective of people who want to give back to support him for all the love and joy that he has brought us.”
The victim is in stable but critical condition at the hospital. If you have any information on the suspect vehicle or the driver of the vehicle please contact Tuscaloosa County Crime Stoppers at 205-752-STOP.
