Birmingham police investigating reported carjacking

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Police are investigating a reported carjacking that was called in Thursday afternoon, but officers say it may not be an actual carjacking.

The person reported someone stole their car from them in the 800 block of 14th Street SW.

Police located the car on Cleveland Avenue SW and put six people in handcuffs.

Investigators say after speaking with the victim and suspects, there are a lot of different stories out there. They say they aren’t even sure if the car was actually stolen.

They released most of the people and took two in for questioning to try to figure out what actually happened.

This incident came as police are investigating a string of real carjackings. Victims report someone hits their car from behind. When they get out to check the damage, someone pulls a gun on them and takes their car.

Police warn people to be careful if they are alone. If you are hit by a car from behind, consider pulling into a gas station or a busy parking lot before you get out.
