BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — A Bessemer family lost everything in a house fire. Eight of them have been living in one motel bedroom for weeks.
“It’s been eight weeks staying at the hotel room. Oh my goodness. We’ve been going from room to room to room,” said Alexis Stewart.
Bessemer police have stepped in to help get the family back on their feet. They surprised them with a shopping trip to Target.
“It’s a lot of help and it’s kinda overwhelming because you don’t expect it,” said Paula Burnett.
A few weeks ago, the Stewarts were getting ready to move. But, one day, they came home and found everything ruined.
On Monday, police escorted the family to Target and gave them $200 to shop. Target decided to match the amount.
“We appreciate anything and everything. Thank you,” said Burnett.
Bessemer PD started a fund called “Feeding the Pig.” Officers take their spare change and pay it forward.
“What we would do is get that money and help a family in need in the Bessemer area,” said Officer Mazeroski Brown.
Police said in light of the negative attention law enforcement is getting, it’s nice to show the public the positive.
“We just want them to know that here is another way that police officers can actually give a helping hand,” said Officer Brown.
The “Feed the Pig” drive is open to the public. Those that want to donate, can go to the Bessemer Police Headquarters.
