ALABASTER, Ala. (WIAT) — Clara Nanette Owens, 51 of Vinemont, is facing felony charges after police said she used a 90-year-old victim’s credit card to make unauthorized purchases.
Owens has been charged with one felony count of financial exploitation of an elderly person and four counts of fraudulent use of a credit card.
According to Lt. Grant Humphries with the Alabaster Police Department, the charges came after the department began investigating fraudulent credit card charges made in the month of June. After looking into the charges, it was determined Owens woas using the victim’s credit card to make purchases without authorization. Owens was said to be the victim’s caregiver.
“Basically, the financial exploitation of an elderly person charge applies to any victims who are 60 or older,” Humphries said.
Both charges are Class C felonies according to Alabama law. Class C felonies carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison per charge upon the suspect’s conviction.
Owens is scheduled to appear in Shelby County District court on December 10 at 8:30 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.
