BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Jet Pep employee was robbed at gunpoint off Bessemer Road, and the suspect is still on the loose.
This happened just a few days before a woman was carjacked at gunpoint at the Marathon gas station next door. Store owners in the area say their businesses have been affected by the influx of crime recently.
The robber came into the Jet Pep around 6:30 in the morning on November 30th and stole several things including cell phone cards and over $500 in cash.
“Customers, they’ve been very indecisive, very scared to come in the stores during certain hours,” Jet Pep employee Guamar Deng said.
Most of the crimes we have reported on off Bessemer Road in Birmingham have happened at night, but this one happened early in the morning.
According to the convenience store owner, the employee was held at gunpoint by the suspect, who was armed with two guns.
“I’m just glad that my friend and my coworker diffused the whole situation,” Deng said.
This happened just days before the carjacking. Every store in the strip mall where that happened has reportedly been broken into, shop owners said.
“It’s all about taking extra precautions. We just have to be careful with what we do,” Deng said.
Police have already alerted women in particular. They say these criminals are preying on victims they see as vulnerable, which has some a little worried.
“I have a daughter and a girlfriend. I have to tell my mom to stay out of certain areas, especially at certain times of the night,” James Craig said.
Despite the several surveillance cameras, Deng says he still has to be extra cautious.
“Sometimes if I have to leave I may have to call the police to escort me out,” Deng said.
If you recognize the man in the surveillance video above, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
