One Team at a Time: The Birmingham Bears

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Bears, nine and 10-year-old basketball players, are eager to learn the game.

They’re also building relationships that will last a lifetime.

WIAT 42 sports anchor Lauren Sisler introduces us to the Bears in this week’s One Team at a Time.

The Birmingham Bears are being trained to be winners. But as coach Marchello Perkins said, winners aren’t defined by their records.

“My objective is to bring children’s competitive nature, build confidence…this is a lifelong thing they actually bond with each other and nine times out of 10 they will be friends for life,” Perkins said. “My goal here is to bring up upstanding young men representing the community and doing our best to make this dream come true, and shooting for a championship also.”

That champion mentality earned the Bears a $1,000 grant from Hibbett Sports and the One Team at a Time program.

Jerry Sanders from the Adamsville Hibbett Sports accompanied Sisler to deliver the Bears some much needed equipment for the season.
