Shoppers pack stores for last-minute gifts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The countdown is on to finish your Christmas shopping. This weekend, Birmingham roads and shops are crowded with people trying to do that.

Hoover Police put out extra patrols around the Riverchase Galleria to aid drivers. The roads were congested around many shopping centers and downtowns in our area.

That helped drum up business for some local vendors, including 28:20 Boutique in Homewood.

“Christmas weekend, the weekend before Christmas, is always the busiest. There’s always just a whole crowd down the street, in the store, you know, it gets kinda hard to move sometimes just with the amount of people, but we love it,” said Meredith Mims, who was working Saturday.

Mary Elizabeth Harrison spent her afternoon crossing off last-minute items on her Christmas list. She says she left her car at home and walked to downtown Homewood to avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot.

“it’s really crowded today. I think everyone’s trying to get in their last minute shopping, since it’s Saturday.”

The National Retail Federation says the Saturday before Christmas is typically the second busiest shopping day of the year for brick-and-mortar retailers.
