MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama Department of Commerce announced Thursday a new addition to the Hyundai production line up in Alabama: the Santa Fe Sport.
Hyundai said the addition of the SUV will diversify the product mix at their Montgomery facility that “turns out their top-selling U.S. sedans.”
Hyundia will reportedly invest $52 million to begin production of the Sanata Fe Sport at the facility, which currently makes Sonata and Elantra sedans.
Production of the SUV is slated to begin summer of 2016.
According to the Alabama Department of Commerce, the Santa Fe will also continue to be made at the Kia facility in West Point, Ga., but they say the move “represents a homecoming for the SUV,” as the Alabama plant produced the SUV between 20015 and 2010 before output was transferred to KIA.
