BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — An early morning purse snatching across the street from a downtown school has people who work in the area on alert.

According to Lt. Sean Edwards with the Birmingham Police Department, a woman was walking to work around 7:30 a.m. Thursday when a man grabbed her waist and snatched her purse.

The incident happened in a high foot-traffic alleyway in the 2100 hundred block of 5th Avenue North. An off duty officer working with Advent Episcopal School heard the incident happen across the street and chased the man. The suspect got away after a two block foot chase. The woman was not harmed physically. People who work in the area are shocked this happened.

“I have never heard anything about any type of crime going on down here,” said Chantae Williams, who works downtown. “There’s always a security guard an officer or police always sitting across the street especially in the morning and the kids are getting dropped off.”

Edwards said officers have a good idea who the individual might be. He hopes that in a week or two they can make an arrest.
