PINSON, Ala. (WIAT) — Students at Clay Chalkville High School held a memorial Wednesday evening for Raven White.
The 16-year-old student was eating pizza in the car with her boyfriend last week when the couple was robbed at gunpoint.
White, who was pregnant, was shot. Neither she nor her unborn child survived.
White was on the girls’ volleyball team at Clay Chalkville.
Brionna Escott, White’s best friend, said she and other teammates planned Wednesday’s memorial because several of White’s friends missed a separate memorial over the weekend, and wanted to say goodbye.
“(White) is just a wonderful person. She was just beautiful. Everything about her just made you smile,” Escott said.
Dozens of students and staff paid tribute to White, sharing funny stories about her and her penchant for snacking.
Tangee Dixon, White’s mother, said Wednesday’s show of love brought her strength.
“Just keep praying for me. I need the strength. As long as people are around me, I’m fine,” Dixon said. “But after all the crowd leaves, I go in the room and I just start crying. I just hold onto her picture and to her teddy bear and I cry. I cry for my child every night.”
Dixon said she has been afraid to return to her apartment since her daughter was murdered nearby.
Dixon’s friends have started a GoFundMe page to raise money to help her move.
