Ringling Brothers to stop using elephants in May, more than 1 year ahead of schedule

(WIAT) — Ringling brothers and Barnum and Bailey will stop using elephants in its shows much sooner than expected.

Elephants will no longer be part of shows in May, which is a year and a half earlier than what was previously announced.

The Asian elephants will retire to Florida.

The company said the 200-acre Center for Elephant Conservation was completed much sooner than expected.

Forty two elephants will call the center home.

In the past, Ringling Brothers has been criticized, picketed and even sued by several animal rights groups for its treatments of the elephants.
