Deputy catches suspect attempting to rob car wash vending machine

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Around 3:30 Tuesday morning, a deputy patrolling in the 5000 block of McAdory School Road saw a “suspicious van” parked at a self-service car wash.

The deputy investigated the vehicle, but found no driver in or around it. The deputy inspected the business and found that a door had been pried open. The deputy looked inside the door and saw a man wearing a ski mask, using a power grinder to attempt to open a money box on a vending machine.

The deputy called for backup and confronted the suspect. According to a media release sent by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, “After a surprised utterance that included several expletives, the suspect complied.”

James Russell Moore, 25, of McCalla, was arrested and charged with burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the first, and theft of property in the third degree. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail, pending $36,000 bond.
