How to stay safe from lead in your water

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – With tests released last week that showed elevated lead levels at some locations in Sebring, you may be wondering how to keep your drinking water safe.

Youngstown Culligan Vice President Bo Cooksey said when it comes to water filters to treat lead, there are basically three options:

  • In-line filters: These filters work at the point at which you get your water out of your water line and include things like pitcher-top filters and filters you can screw onto your faucet. According to Cooksey, these will filter out bad tastes and smells but remove very little lead, although the National Resources Defense Council says that these filters can remove significant amounts of contaminants, including lead. These can cost anywhere from about $30 to several hundred dollars.
  • Reverse osmosis filters: These filter systems will remove lead, according to Cooksey. ROs remove 95 to 99 percent of contaminants, including lead, and Culligan rents them for $29 per month. You can buy one outright for around $1,300. Either way, the filters will need to be changed once per year.
  • Lead-specific filters: These filters will remove lead and only lead, but are quite expensive, Cooksey said.

Even if your water does contain more lead than the EPA allows, it should still be safe to bathe and shower, according to the CDC.
