Fairfield western hills mall shooting

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) — Police say two people were shot inside the Western Hills Malls in Fairfield Friday night.

According to police, the shooting happened inside the mall. Investigators followed the blood trail out the front doors, where they think the shooter escaped.

A 5 year old and a 21 year old were shot. Police believe the 21 year old, who was shot in the leg, was the target.

Police say the two were hit by bullets, and three people were injured by breaking glass caused by an exchange of bullets between the shooter and the 21-year-old victim.

They say a person of interest in the shooting showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Police say the suspect could be charged as early as tomorrow.

Authorities say the injuries are not life threatening. The child was grazed, police say. He has reportedly been released from the hospital and is home with his mother.

Those injured by debris are in their late teens and twenties, officials say.

Police are actively looking for witnesses.

Fairfield police, Fairfield fire and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene.
