Birmingham cold case sets precedent for police involvement

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Rodrekus Johnson was murdered in 2003, and the search for his killer continues into this year. On Wednesday, the victim’s mother Carolyn Johnson, spoke with the media about her son’s case.

Johnson stated that she decided to hold the conference because of her hope that someone who knows anything about her son’s killer will come forward. She stated that with each passing year, her son’s death never gets easier.

Her son’s death was sudden. As he sat outside of a party in his car, a stray bullet struck him. Since that night, police have had a difficult time establishing leads in the case.

In an effort to make inroads into their cold case files, BPD have started putting the pictures of victims and their case files on playing cards distributed in prisons. The department has expressed hope that seeing these cases will jog the memory of inmates that may know the victims.

Police are asking anyone with any information on the case to call them at 254-7777.
