BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UAB is launching a new state-of-the-art driving simulator lab. It’s the first of its kind in the state.
It takes the form of a 2016 Honda Pilot that features a fully functioning steering wheel, brake and turn signals. The surrounding scenery features three 80 inch projection screens with sound effects.
It will give UAB researchers the chance to perform important safety studies involving distracted driving.
It’s the only SUV simulator in the world and it’s going to allow us to test different types of driver behaviors in a safe, controlled manner in a car that’s actually in a building. So it’s very safe,” Despina Stavrinos, Ph.D. with the UAB Department of Psychology said.
Apress release from the university says they “partnered with Honda, who provided a full-bodied 2016 Honda Pilot built at their factory in Lincoln to be retrofitted with state-of-the-art simulator technology funded by ALDOT.”
