BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Imagine for a moment that you are in 18th Century France.
You pull up to your home of stucco walls and limestone trim. A fountain is in the front of your circular driveway. Intricate iron detail adorn the windows and front door. It all stands tall, stately and regal. That is this year’s Decorator’s ShowHouse and it sits in Mountain Brook.
CBS42 took a tour inside for the 40th anniversary of this annual showcase.
The McTyeires traveled around the world, and even rubbed elbowed with celebrities like Dezi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. During those trips, they began collecting antiques for the estate.
A spiral staircase, marble floors and detailed woodwork are all a part of the interior structure of the McTyeire home on Old Leeds Road. Built in the late 1960’s by a Birmingham architect, the French styled home is a decorator’s playhouse. There are 18 rooms, a secret garden and a mountaintop view by the pool, which has given 15 Birmingham designers inspiration. They each chose a room and volunteered their services and money to create a masterpiece.
Hand painted wallpaper, a mirrored refrigerator, his and her bathrooms and a children’s room complete with timeless antiques and a dollhouse that is fit for any princess are just a few highlights.
