HELENA, Ala. (WIAT) — A suspect is in custody after a woman was killed in a hit and run on Helena Parkway outside of the Morgan Road Golden Rule.
Helena Police Chief Pete Folmar tells CBS42 28-year-old Damian Jackson has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a felony charge. Tuesday, police say he has also been charged with manslaughter and unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.
Helena police believe Jackson was there to meet the victim, who has been identified as 33-year-old Holly Myrick, to give her a controlled substance in the parking lot. Police say the two got in an altercation and Myrick was hanging on Jackson’s door as he attempted to leave. Police say she fell off the car and was run over.
Police received the call around 1:45 p.m. and arrived to find the woman in the road suffering severe injuries. Witnesses told police the vehicle that hit her had fled the scene. Fire medics began trying to stabilize her for transport to the hospital via a Lifesaver helicopter, but she died from her injuries at the scene.
Helena police relayed the information about the suspect vehicle to nearby departments, and a fire marshal with the Alabaster FD saw the vehicle off 1st Ave W in Alabaster. He tried to stop the vehicle, but it fled and eluded him. Around 3 p.m., officers located the suspect and vehicle in an Alabaster driveway, and took him into custody. The case remains under investigation.
