BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Four of the eight children inside the home during a shooting Wednesday night were injured and are recovering at Children’s of Alabama. All of them are under the age of thirteen.
Birmingham Police say the children are in serious but stable condition. The oldest, a 12-year-old girl, and an 8-year-old were shot in the chest. CBS 42 News cameras were at the hospital Wednesday morning when a Birmingham police investigator left the emergency room. He was carrying a bag of clothing, and spent about 40 minutes inside the ER.
Birmingham police tell CBS 42 news there were eight children inside the house when the shooting started. An 11-year-old was shot in the hip and hand and a 5-year-old was also injured. Four other children inside the home were unharmed.
Officers say that a witness heard the shooting and saw the children running out of the house. Three of the four uninjured children are in DHR custody. The fourth is with another family member.
The mother of the children, 34-year-old Coral Anita Wilson, died at the scene.
