Former Tuscaloosa teacher charged with rape and sexual abuse of a child under 12

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — A former City of Tuscaloosa teacher has been arrested again, this time on charges of rape in the first degree and sexual abuse of a child under 12.

32-year-old Jarvis Lanier was previously arrested on five counts of a school employee having sexual contact with a child under 19.

His first arrest stemmed from allegations that he inappropriately touched five female students between 13 and 17 years old at a Tuscaloosa City School. On May 6, the Department of Human Resources told the Juvenile Division of a new investigation into Lanier. Tuscaloosa Police Lt. Teena Richardson says Lanier was arrested on charges of rape in the first degree and sexual abuse of a child under 12. He is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a bond of $120,000.

Police previously said Lanier was employed with the City of Tuscaloosa School System as a teacher at Central Elementary Primary School and Track Coach at Westlawn Middle School for two years. According to the school system, Lanier resigned April 7.
