MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — At least one person, believed to be a grandmother, was killed and one child is suffering from minor injuries after a SUV plowed through a dance school on Old Shell Road in Mobile on Friday afternoon.
Officials tell News 5’s Allen Carter that a woman inside the Sheffield School of the Dance was killed when the SUV suddenly barreled through the building sometime around 4:00pm. The body of the woman is still trapped under the SUV as of 6:15pm.
The exact status of the driver, or what caused the driver to crash, is unknown at this time. A total of five individuals, including one child, are suffering from injuries. The child is expected to be okay.
Several children were seen with scraps and bruises. Teresa Hutchinson, the owner of the studio, told News 5 a dance class with six children was happening when the SUV crashed. Several children were trapped, but miraculously, not seriously hurt.
When we arrived at the scene, children were seen screaming out, calling for their parents. Many parents have been driving up over the last hour, embracing their children in tears.
Several witnesses kept referring to the driver as a “he,” says News 5’s Allen Carter on News 5 at 6:00. The witnesses say the driver was pulled from the SUV, where he was presumably taken away in an ambulance.
The latest images from News 5’s Jacqueline Quynh show the exterior back wall of the studio damaged from the SUV nearly breaking through.
