Fultondale HS evacuated after nearby tanker truck fire

FULTONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — Officials say about 150 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled Tuesday afternoon when a tanker truck was involved in a crash with another vehicle on Carson Road.

No one was injured. Crews out down foam to keep the fumes, which are highly flammable, from spreading to the air.

Birmingham fire Capt. Harold says a car hit the tanker truck, and the tanker caught on fire. Crews also put down foam to keep the fuel out of the sewer systems.

Fultondale High School was evacuated after the fiery spill, the school system told CBS42. According to representatives of the school, 60 students and 50 adults were moved from the school to Jefferson County Learning Center East at 50 Long Street.

Parents were be notified as to where they can pick up their children. All children are accounted for and are safe, Nez Calhoun with Jefferson County Schools says. Calhoun says there weren’t that many students there.

Fultondale Fire worked the scene of the tanker truck fire. Police evacuated the surrounding area. Hazmat and foam crew personnel from Birmingham Fire and Rescue assisted.

Students will return to school on Wednesday.
