VIDEO: Early morning apartment fire displaces 38 residents

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A local apartment complex fire was contained around 4 a.m. on Sunday by the Birmingham Fire Department, but not before the fire destroyed a few homes.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to a call at about 1 a.m that sent them to the  Ascot Place apartments at the 500 block of Gadsden Highway in Birmingham, according to Alicia Anger of the Birmingham Red Cross. The fire damaged 20 units in building A of the complex, and displaced 38 individuals.

Red Cross showed up around 3 a.m. to provide snacks and workers to the residents and returned later to provide them with breakfast as well. Lodging is being provided.
