Eugene, Ore. (WIAT) — Samford Sophomore Pole Vaulter Tray Oates came within inches of making it to the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Oates finished Tied for 4th at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
“My first reaction is just kind of bummed out.” Said Oates “But you know people have been reminding me you know just how amazing this last month and a half of my season has been.”
Oates, the youngest vaulter to make the finals at just 21-years-old, found himself as one of the last four vaulters standing, but failed to clear the height of 18 feet 8 1/8 inches.
“You know obviously I’m disappointed that second attempt at 70 will haunt me forever you know for four years it’ll haunt me.” Said Oates “So I’m planning on getting a picture of it I’m sure somebody has a picture somewhere where I’m over it you know I cleared it and then I barely brushed it off I’m going to put that on my wall or something to try and motivate me to you know work hard.”
