BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) —
Alabama Department of Transportation continues work in the second phase of the downtown bridge replacement project. On Tuesday, work began on Interstate 20/59 Northbound at Arkadelphia Road (exit 123). Construction will cause double lane closures until Saturday. From Wednesday, July 6 until Thursday, July 7 at 7 a.m. the two outside lanes will intermittently close between Arkadelphia Rd and Interstate 65 to perform milling and striping work. The outside two lanes reopened Wednesday by 5 a.m., but will close again Wednesday evening. Thursday during daylight hours, construction will pause, and then move to the inside of I-20/59 NB. Double lane closures again Thursday, July 7 at 7 p.m. to Saturday, July 9 at 7 a.m.
Major delays are possible Friday during rush hour on I-20/59 NB through the work zone if overnight work does not finish on time. Highway 11 NB will be the best alternate if traffic begins to back up on the interstate.
Also, the inside lane of the 6th Avenue North Entrance Ramp onto I-65 Northbound will be shut down and reduce the ramp to one lane for an extended period of time.
