Sheriff: Woman arrested after child severely malnourished in ‘graphic’ abuse case

CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A Vinemont woman is behind bars after a young child was found to be severely malnourished by doctors.

According to the Cullman County Sheriff, 32-year-old Charity Nicole Jackson was arrested and charged with Aggravated Child Abuse.

The victim, who is younger than 12, was seen at an out of town hospital, where the attending physician discovered visible signs of child abuse. The sheriff’s office says doctors noticed the victim was very malnourished, and had bruises and cuts on her head among other undisclosed wounds.

The sheriff says because of the graphic nature of the crime, and the fact that it involves a minor child, they can only release limited details.

“It breaks my heart to see a child being harmed but it also infuriates me at the same time. I am glad this person is now in jail where she belongs,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry. “I would also like to think our investigators and those who assisted them in this case.”
