BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Coming off a year in which he was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, Daniel Carlson is one of 30 place kickers to be named to the preseason watch list for the award in 2016.
Last season, Carlson went 23-27 in his field goal attempts, good enough to land him on the All-SEC first team and second team Walter Camp All-American. Carlson hit four field goals of 50+ yards last season, an Auburn record, including a 56-yard kick against Louisville, which is the fifth longest kick in FBS history.
In his two years as a starter, he has yet to miss a PAT. His 97 straight PATs is the fourth best streak in Auburn history.
Also named to the watch list is Alabama kicker Adam Griffith. He was named second team All-SEC last season after going 23-32 on his kicks. His 23 made field goals is sixth best among returning FBS kickers.
Griffith hit his career long kick last season, as well: a 55-yarder against LSU. His perfect 62-62 on PATs was the second best season in Alabama history on extra points.
The Lou Groza award is given annually to the nation’s best college place-kicker. Semifinalists for the award will be named on Thursday, November 3rd with the three finalists selected Tuesday, November 22nd. The winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show December 8th.
