SEC Media Days: Day 1 storylines

HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) — SEC Media Days begins today in Hoover as the unofficial start to football season. Today’s schedule is complete with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and representatives from Auburn, Florida, and Vanderbilt.

Here are a couple storylines to follow as Day 1 rolls along:

  • What will Commissioner Sankey say in his opening address? Every year, the commissioner of the SEC kicks off Media Days with an address, usually reviewing last season’s successes in all sports and laying out plans to improve the conference in the year ahead. The question is how much does the opening speech hit on the negatives from the past year. We will wait to see if Sankey says anything regarding the sexual assault cases from around college football and if he mentions anything about the ongoing Ole Miss investigation.
  • Does Gus Malzahn feel the heat going into 2016? After an underwhelming 2015 season ended in the Birmingham Bowl, questions started to surround Gus Malzahn and his job security as the head man of the Auburn Tigers. He will once again enter the season with questions at quarterback (which he will be asked about today, surely) and begins an important year against Clemson, expected to be one of the top two teams entering the year.
  • Can Florida build on 2015’s success? In Jim McElwain’s first year in Gainesville, the Gators made a surprise appearance in the SEC Championship Game, relying on a stout, experienced defense to carry them to the East division crown. In 2016, Florida now looks to build on last year with new pieces on defense and still questions about who will be getting the ball under center. If McElwain has an answer to the latter question may say a lot about how successful his second season will be.
  • How much can Vandy’s leadership improve the Commodores? For the first time in almost a decade, Vanderbilt has names that will be familiar to SEC fans. Zach Cunningham and Ralph Webb are the defensive and offensive leaders, each coming off 2015 season’s with many records broken and personal accolades. The ‘Dores will rely on their leadership throughout the season, but the team’s success will depend on how the rest of the squad responds around those two pieces.

Stay tuned to as well as follow along on Twitter @WIAT42Sports for updates from Hoover today and all this week.
