CORDOVA, Ala. (WIAT) — The Cordova Police Department is getting a few new bulletproof vests thanks to a grant from the Fraternal Order of Police. This is the second time in two years they’ve received the grant. It helps offset the cost of replacing the vests. They need to be replaced every few years.
They are the lighter weight vests that officers wear under their uniforms. With recent violence against police, the added protection helps morale for officers and their families.
Cordova Police Chief Nick Smith said, “It’s important, I think it gives a family, when their loved one comes to work, that peace of mind that there’s that extra piece of protection that their loved ones are a little bit safer.”
Officers in Cordova also have the option to wear a heavier vest. They were purchased through a Homeland Security grant. The vests are heavy and can weigh up to thirty pounds.
