JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Big changes are coming for some Jefferson County students as they get ready to start back to school. A federal judge approved the re-configuring of some elementary, middle and high school students in Jefferson County.
Brighton Middle School will go from kindergarten through eighth grade to kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh and eighth grade students from Brighton will have to go to Pleasant Grove High School and Hueytown Middle School.
This will also reconfigure Pleasant Grove Middle School. The sixth graders will go to Pleasant Grove Elementary, while seventh and eighth graders will go to the high school. The system plans to turn the vacated middle school building into the middle school IB Programme.
“This will allow those seventh and eighth graders to have access to career tech programs, to advanced tech programs and to the full compliment of extra curriculum like athletics and band,” Superintendent Craig Pouncey said.
The school system has sent out letters to parents and the changes will begin this year.
