GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office says the county coroner has been arrested in connection with theft of prescription medicine.
The Etowah County coroner was arrested following a search at his home in Gadsden Tuesday night. The investigation began after citizens brought evidence that Head may be using his office to obtain controlled substance for himself to the attention of the sheriff’s office.
According to Sheriff Todd Entrekin, relatives of deceased reported seeing Etowah County coroner Michael Head taking prescription medications from a death scene.
Head is charged with one count of second degree theft of property and one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (Ambien). He is being held in the Etowah County Detention Center on a $4,000 bond.
Deputies also arrested the coroner’s son, 26-year-old John Simon Head of Gadsden at the home. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (heroin, methamphetamine and Adderall), which is a felony, and one count of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. At the time of his arrest, he was out on bond for previous narcotics charges. He is being held without bond.
