Man killed in Bessemer train collision drove around downed crossing arms, police say

BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — One person is dead after a train collided with a vehicle this afternoon in Bessemer near Grant St. and Airport Lane SW.

Bessemer police say one man was killed in the crash. He has been identified as Darris Renardis Robinson. The passenger vehicle was left in pieces. According to Bessemer Police, Robinson drove his vehicle around the railroad crossing arms, which were properly functioning. Witnesses told police the vehicle had stopped at the downed arms, then continued around them and was hit by the train on the tracks.

The train involved in the crash was an AMTRAK, on its way to Birmingham from New Orleans. No passengers on board the train were injured, and the train sustained minimal damage.
