BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)- With an undefeated regular season campaign, 2015 had the makings of a special season for the Wenonah Dragons. A loss in the second round of the playoffs to Mortimer Jordan derailed that quest.
So this season is all about conditioning for the Dragons. As a 5A school, Wenonah fields a smaller team than most other schools, with only about 45 players on the roster.
Usually that would be a disadvantage, but not many teams are in as good a shape as Wenonah, and they like to use a verse from the Book of Proverbs as their team motto.
“The man who works will get what he wants and the man that is lazy never will,” head coach Ronald Cheatham said, reciting the verse.
Cheatham is in his 28th season as Wenonah’s coach. With his experience, the summer heat is not a problem for his players.
“We play both sides of the field,” senior Blair Green said. “So that helps too when we are tired. We call somebody out. We got to play.”
“We run gassers, snakes, 100s on the track,” senior Demond Brown said. “Soo we are in shape before the season.”
Come game time the Dragons are hoping that conditioning pays off on the field.
Wenonah begins the 2016 campaign at home against Midfield on Aug. 25.
