Birmingham Police arrest teen suspect after he reportedly killed, burned mother

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police have detained a suspect in the murder of a woman at Sunhill Road.

Police went to an apartment after receiving a call on Sunday from the victim’s boyfriend, who stated that he wanted to file a missing person’s report, according to the release. While at the scene, the boyfriend and a witness began searching for the victim, and he found what appeared to be the charred remains of the victim inside of an abandoned apartment in the complex.

Police have arrested 19-year-old Johnathan Pitts in connection with the murder of his mother, 41-year-old Cheryl Harrell. At this time, he is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
