Trash in Fairfield causing bad odor after police tell activist he can’t pick it up

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) — The city of Fairfield will not be picking up trash for people that do not pay their bills.

Residents are complaining of a foul smell and bugs coming from trash bins that have been sitting for close to a month outside of some homes.

Fairfield resident Mercutio Southall rented a truck and started picking up trash bags that had been sitting for weeks. He was told by Fairfield police that he needed a permit to pick up trash.

CBS42 News reporter Alex Finnie interviews Southall about his grassroots effort and what else he plans on doing to clean up the city.
