Fairfield struggles to pay for elections

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) — Fairfield has been struggling for months to pay its bills. Bus service and trash pickup have been cut and water service is threatened.

Now, questions are raised over whether the city can afford its own elections. There are six council seats and the council presidency up for grabs, but Fairfield has not paid to print the ballots for the election that is in less than two weeks.

The Jefferson County Office of Registrars is providing materials such as voting books and machines. Ballots are provided and paid for through an independent company, which has not yet been done by the city, according to the chairman of the Board of Registrars.

Elections are in less than two weeks away on August 23.
