AUBURN, Ala. (WIAT) — The family of a Montgomery woman shot to death by police say authorities are wrongly trying to portray her as a drug abuser.
In a statement last week, Auburn Police say 36-year-old Melissa Boarts took six medications before being shot and kiled by officers in April. Police say not all of the medications were prescribed to her.
Boarts’ mother, Terry Boarts, says that isn’t true and her daughter had all the required prescriptions. Police Chief Paul Register says tests couldn’t determine if one of the six medications was prescription.
A grand jury did not charge the officers who fatally shot Boarts. Her parents called 911 earlier, fearing their mentally unstable daughter wanted to kill herself.
Authorities say police opened fire after Boarts charged at them with a knife.
