CALERA, Ala. (WIAT) – Mrs. Chelsea Rutledge has extra money to spend on her classroom thanks to the generosity of the One Class at a Time sponsors; American’s First Financial, Little Caesars, and Pepsi.
“I always wanted to be a teacher. I’ve never wanted to do anything else. But my primary goal was to make a difference. And teaching math is just my vessel to make a difference. It’s not really about the math; it’s about the kids in my room and what I can do to help them be successful,” Rutledge said.
She wrote in for the grant specifically to get a set of classroom calculators. Not only for her class but the whole math department.
“So this is a one department at a time grant! We’re trying to get all of our math teachers, and we have six of them, a class set of scientific calculators so that we can train our students, so they have the opportunity to be more successful on testing, and be prepared for high school,” said Rutledge.
She says calculators can also be a doorway into more complicated math for some students who struggle with basics.
“It can make a difference for a student who can become a top-notch student when they have a calculator in their hands! Sometimes they’ll understand the fancy work, but they’re still stuck on multiplication or division or positives and negatives, and the calculator gives them the chance to be the math student they can be,” Rutledge said.
