TUSCALOOSA, Ala (WIAT) — Alabama star linebacker Tim Williams was arrested for carrying a gun without a permit early Thursday morning.
Williams and another man were in the Publix parking lot on University when an officer on patrol smelled marijuana coming from their vehicle, according to the police report. Officers searched the vehicle and found a clear twist top bag with marijuana in the front console and a Glock 41 under the driver’s side seat.
Williams told officers the vehicle was his. According to the report, Williams and the driver were both Mirandized and agreed to questioning: the driver, identified as Tykeem J.D. Dunaway admitted he was holding the marijuana for a friend.
The report says officers asked Williams if he had a permit for the pistol; he responded he had purchased it three weeks ago while home in Louisiana. He said he was given a temporary paper permit by the gun store, but didn’t have it in his possession. Williams gave the officers a receipt for the firearm from the gun store, and said he thought the gun receipt would qualify for a pistol permit.
Officers informed Williams that to conceal carry, he must have a valid pistol permit. He was then taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
Williams, who was booked into jail at 2:09 a.m. and later released on a $300 bond, posted the following on Twitter this morning:
Williams is expected to be a high draft pick next spring after a break season in 2015.
CBS42 reached out to the university for comment; they confirmed Williams’ arrest by the University of Alabama PD, but have not released any further statement on the matter.
Nick Saban has issued a statement on Williams’s arrest, which can be read below:
