Birmingham 2025: Burying the time capsule, and looking ahead

(WIAT) — Earlier this week, many of you joined CBS42 on a journey to the future.

As part of Birmingham 2025, we introduced the CBS42 time capsule and Birmingham Mayor William Bell placed the first letter inside our time capsule, live on-air Wednesday night.

We also made a few stops to get some other visions for 2025: first to Childcare Resources Executive Director Joan Wright, then from Dr. Ed Partridge at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Next stop was Gear Up Alabama with Dr. Samantha Elliot Briggs, whose students wrote down goals that put into the capsule for CBS42.

But in a year of national headline making news from right here in Alabama, we thought we’d solicit some letters from our leaders in politics and the community.

Our team of reporters looked ahead to the future on the economy, education, crime, entertainment, and sports venues.

At the end, Mayor Bell made his largest prediction, that in nine years, Birmingham will be a player in professional sports.

We ended the program with the mayor placing the first letter in the CBS42 time capsule, and with that, the capsule went into the ground for the next nine years.
