CBS42 buries Birmingham 2025 time capsule

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Earlier this week, many of you joined the CBS42 team on a journey to the future.

As part of our Birmingham 2025 special report, we announced the CBS42 time capsule. Birmingham Mayor William Bell placed the first letter in the capsule. Today, it’s time to bury it.

We made a few stops to get some other visions for 2025: first to Childcare Resources Executive Director Joan Wright, then to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer CEnter to pick up the vision from Doctor Ed Partridge.

“If all of this comes true, we’re going to make a real difference in cancer, and I think a lot of it will in the next nine years,” partridge reflected.

Next, we stopped by Gear Up Alabama with Dr. Samantha Elliott Briggs. Their students wrote down goals, and Briggs scrolled them up for ua/

“Gear Up stands for gaining early awareness and readiness for undergraduate programs,” briggs explained. “Our goal we started with these students in sixth and seventh grade and we are getting them to college.”

We left with scrolls in hand for our time capsule.

But that’s not all that’s inside the shiny silver tube to the future. A letter from Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, messages submitted on the WIAT42 Facebook page from our viewers, and mementos of the Magic City in 2016 were placed with care inside. Also inside is a thumb drive with our Birmingham 2025 special report. To see all the items placed inside, make sure to watch the video above.

Nine years from today, the team at CBS42 will dig up the time capsule, buried out by our deck and marked with a plaque, and reminisce on the memories, changes and triumphs to our communities, our state and our nation. We hope you’ll stick with us as we grow right alongside you.
