Childersburg chips in to help officer wounded in line of duty

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. (WIAT) — The community of Childersburg is coming together to help an officer wounded in the line of duty. Kevin Kirk was injured on September 16 while chasing a suspect wanted in the murder of a Childersburg mother.

Since then, he’s been out of work and recovering from his injuries. However, supporters say they were shocked to learn he cannot draw his full check, only 66% of his regular pay, while he is on leave.

“We just wanted to do something to help him and his family,” said Donna Jones, who started fund raising for the officer.

Since last Wednesday, she and her husband have organized a fund at the police department, collecting money for Kirk and his family. They’ve raised nearly $1,000 in that time.

“With so many things about officers in the news nowadays and many of them negative, it’s so nice to be able to see that, as far as Childersburg is concerned, our community supports our officers and we’re backing them 100 percent,” Jones said.

You can donate by dropping off your gift to the Childersburg Police Department or visiting the GoFundMe page set up for Kirk.
