Birmingham Police investigating shooting, suspect dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, in which the woman’s ex-boyfriend has been named as a suspect.

Police responded to a call of a woman shot around 7:05 a.m. at the 700 block of Albany Street. When officers arrived, they found the victim lying on the floor in the hallway with multiple gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.

The victim has been identified as Martha Bryant, 30, of Birmingham.

According to the release from BPD, the department’s investigation revealed that the victim’s ex-boyfriend entered her home early in the morning and started an argument. Witnesses stated that they heard a struggle, and heard gunshots shortly afterwards.

The suspect reportedly left the home, and was later detained by Fairfield Police driving a Ford Fusion in the 4000 block of Lloyd Noland Parkway. According to FPD, the suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
