UPDATE: The fire was contained Tuesday evening.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Fire Department has units on the scene of a blaze near the US Steel plant on the 600 block of Tin Mill Road.

The blaze began in the woods, and US Steel was first on the scene in case it made a jump to their property.

According to Assistant Fire Captain Buddy Wilks, the fire started behind an unidentified business on Tin Mill Road. There are four separate pockets of fire being worked by the departments on the scene: Birmingham, Pleasant Grove, and U.S. Steel.

Wilks told CBS42 News around 4 p.m.that the fire is around “65-70 percent contained,” though cautioned that due to the dry conditions of the vegetation, the fire could start back up.

Capt. Brian Harrell has stated at approximately 4:45 p.m. that the fire is 75 percent contained.

Around 6 p.m., the fire was reported as around 90 percent contained.

WIAT will keep you updated as more details emerge.
